Private Rescue of NASA Telescope Hits Snag

Katalyst Space Technologies' ambitious effort to save a NASA telescope from crashing to Earth has run into serious trouble just three weeks after launch. The company's Link satellite is spinning out of control and can't communicate properly after its thrusters malfunctioned over the weekend, threatening a $30 million rescue operation that was assembled in less than a year.

Katalyst hasn't abandoned the mission. The company says it's working nonstop to recover Link's functionality. "The mission remains active and we continue to believe that with these changes, Link has a viable path to rendezvous with Swift," the company stated. All of Link's other major systems appear to be functioning normally, which leaves room for hope.

What's at Risk

Swift isn't just another satellite. For more than two decades, it's been one of the most productive tools for studying some of the universe's most extreme events. Scientific observations have been put on hold while the rescue drama unfolds, and every day that passes is a day the telescope loses altitude.

The mission represents a bet on whether private companies can handle the kind of complex, high-stakes operations that government space agencies have traditionally monopolized. Success would validate the model. Failure would mean losing a valuable scientific instrument and raising questions about whether rushing commercial solutions into orbit—no matter how well-intentioned—is the right path forward.

Neither Katalyst nor NASA is giving up hope. But the clock is ticking, and Link's thruster problems are a stark reminder that space operations, whether public or private, remain unforgiving.
