Magnitude-4.7 Quake Hits Remote WA, Largest This Year

A magnitude-4.7 earthquake struck near Cocklebiddy on Australia's remote Eyre Highway in Western Australia early Wednesday morning, marking the biggest recorded seismic event in the state this year. The quake hit about 3am near the Cocklebiddy Roadhouse, more than 1,000km east of Perth on the Nullarbor Plain.

Tyson Allamson, one of the only people at the roadhouse, felt the tremor. "I woke up and was like, 'That's not normal'," he said. "It went for about three minutes, then stopped." The area's extreme remoteness meant only one person reported feeling the earthquake. There have been no reports of damage.

Detection and Scale

Geoscience Australia confirmed the quake was picked up by seismometers across the country, including in Darwin, Canberra and Charters Towers. Senior seismologist Jonathan Griffin called it a reasonably "decent-sized event." He noted that getting up towards magnitude-5 is around where damage might start to appear if buildings are very close and not well constructed. The quake was shallow at a depth of about 5 kilometres.

Dr Griffin explained that Australia experiences on average one magnitude-5 earthquake every year, and about 100 earthquakes with a magnitude of 3. "Magnitude-5 is about 30 times larger than a magnitude-4, in terms of the energy released," he said.

Regional Context

Last year, a magnitude-4.7 quake was detected in Wyalkatchem in July, and another magnitude-4.7 quake was recorded offshore in August. Earlier this year, a magnitude-5.5 earthquake was recorded in remote South Australia near the Northern Territory border in April.

The closest regional city to Cocklebiddy is Kalgoorlie-Boulder, which experienced significant seismic damage 16 years ago. In 2010, a magnitude-5 earthquake hit Kalgoorlie-Boulder, severely damaging several buildings and leading to the evacuation of Kalgoorlie's Super Pit gold mine. That event demonstrated the potential economic disruption even moderate earthquakes can cause in mining-dependent communities.

The Nullarbor Plain's sparse population and lack of infrastructure meant Wednesday's earthquake posed minimal risk to property or economic activity. The region's isolation, while limiting immediate human impact, also highlights the challenges of monitoring and responding to natural events in Australia's vast interior.
