Court Passport Order Shadows Bolsonaro's Departure

Flávio Bolsonaro left Brazil for Argentina after the deadline to surrender his Brazilian passports had expired, and boarded a private charter flight bound for Ecuador, Argentina's migration authority said Wednesday. Brazil's Supreme Court had ordered him to hand over his regular and diplomatic passports; whether he complied remains unclear.

Bolsonaro, a defeated Brazilian presidential candidate and senator, traveled with his wife, Fernanda Antunes Figueira Bolsonaro, and daughters Carolina Figueira Bolsonaro and Luiza Figueira Bolsonaro. The authority said the family entered Argentina at 10:50 p.m. after crossing the Tancredo Neves International Bridge, a primary border checkpoint linking Brazil to Misiones province.

The migration authority said the four had valid travel documents, faced no legal impediments to entering Argentina and were recorded without incident. At 11:30 p.m. local time, after clearing immigration, they boarded a charter operated by aviation company Baires Fly S.A. The filed flight plan listed Guayaquil, Ecuador, as the destination.

The order and the exit

The Supreme Court served Bolsonaro with an order to surrender his Brazilian passports Monday. The deadline for his regular and diplomatic passports expired at noon Tuesday. Allies said late Tuesday that Bolsonaro also had an Italian passport, but the article does not establish which documents the family used to travel or whether he surrendered the Brazilian ones.

In a video, Bolsonaro said he received the order outside the home where his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, is serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest for attempting a coup following his 2022 election loss to Lula. After that defeat, Jair Bolsonaro fled Brazil for Florida and returned three months later.

The passport order is a direct exercise of judicial authority over a senator's travel. But the available account leaves a central question unresolved: whether Flávio Bolsonaro complied with it. Argentina's migration authority, meanwhile, reported that the family met its requirements to enter Argentina. The two systems of authority appear in the same journey, with no reported incident at the border.

An election dispute becomes a diplomatic one

The departure could cause a diplomatic rift between Brazil's newly reelected President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Argentina's President Javier Milei, who traveled to Brazil to take part in Bolsonaro's campaign.

Lula told a few dozen supporters outside the presidential residence in Brasilia that he lacked precise information about Bolsonaro's whereabouts but knew he had left Brazil. “I regret that he left Brazil, because he could have stayed here and proven that the accusations are not true,” Lula said. “This act of leaving Brazil is shameful.”

U.S. President Donald Trump said early Wednesday he would approve of Bolsonaro coming to the United States, calling him and his family “fine people.” Trump also called the election “really strange” and “terrible,” and said he didn't endorse the results. He didn't elaborate.

Leaders around the world and the Organization of American States endorsed the result and congratulated Lula, who was reelected by about 4.4 million votes in the second and final round. The account reports no community-organized response or mutual-aid effort around Bolsonaro's departure; the public voices are presidents, a migration authority and a court order. Neither Brazilian government representatives nor Bolsonaro's representatives were immediately available to comment.
