Rio Tonight: Blanc Tribute, Festival and R$30 Samba

Guinga, Moacyr Luz and Zé Renato take the stage at Teatro Rival Petrobras at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, honoring 80 years of Aldir Blanc. Each shared songs and stages with the lyricist behind “O Bêbado e a Equilibrista.” The session, also billed as “Aldir Blanc 80 Anos,” takes place in a small historic room off Cinelândia, where Blanc’s repertoire has played for years. Find the venue at Rua Álvaro Alvim 33, near the Cinelândia metro; tickets are listed on Sympla.

The tribute is one of several options across Centro and Lapa on October 1, 2026. That same night, the 28th Festival do Rio opens.

A Festival Built for the City

The festival runs through October 11: eleven days and 359 films. Evening screenings take place at cinemas including CineCarioca José Wilker, Cine Santa Teresa, Kinoplex São Luiz and Reserva Cultural in Niterói. The programme brings together premieres, retrospectives and Brazilian competition titles. Tickets and the schedule are on the festival's programme page. RioMarket's industry days run from October 1 to October 10.

Films screen every evening through closing day. Workers with fixed schedules get more than one chance to catch a title.

What a Night Out Costs

Thursday is when the week starts leaning toward the weekend. It's also when samba houses set their lowest entry prices of the week. Carioca da Gema, at Avenida Mem de Sá 79 in Lapa, holds its regular Thursday samba night, with acoustic samba de raiz played close to the tables. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.; the main show starts at 8:30. Entry from Tuesday to Thursday is R$30, about US$5.79, and tickets are sold through the venue's website. The venue's page doesn't name that night's act.

The article estimates that entry at R$30 plus about R$50, or about US$9.65, for drinks covers an evening at Carioca da Gema. Cards and Pix are widely accepted, though small notes can help at street stalls. Seated bars usually add about 10% as serviço. Brazilian law makes that charge optional, so diners can ask to have it removed.

Prices at other venues aren't as clear. Relentless Gods plays Circo Voador, the open-air concrete venue beneath the Arcos da Lapa, at 8 p.m.; tickets are on Eventim. It's a standing-floor show in a room that has operated as a midsize concert venue since the 1980s. Comparable recent shows ran from R$50 for half-price tickets, about US$9.65, to R$200 for full price, about US$38.60. Buyers are told to confirm the price at checkout. The Banco Central PTAX closing sell rate for Wednesday, September 30, was R$5.1809 to US$1.

Rio Scenarium, a three-floor venue at Rua do Lavradio 20 in the antique district, lists three live sets starting at 7 p.m. The venue announced its programme on Instagram. It didn't publish a cover charge in advance. Rio Scenarium presents samba and Brazilian classics, with a DJ room upstairs.

Getting Home

The metro closes around midnight. Plan a car ride from the venue door for late exits. Avenida Mem de Sá and Rua do Lavradio stay lit and busy on show nights, but side streets empty late.

Other listings include “Gonzaguinha É,” a musical about Gonzaguinha running Thursday through Sunday at Teatro Sesc Ginástico in Centro. Vivo Rio has no show Thursday; its next date is Marina Sena on Saturday, October 3. Election Sunday falls on October 4, three days after the listings. City streets followed a normal schedule Thursday evening, with no holiday. The evening was warm: INMET readings for October 1 ranged from 22°C (72°F) to 31°C (88°F), with mid-20s Celsius expected after dark.

Why This Matters: Thursday's listings show how access to culture in Rio depends on price, transparency and transport. A R$30 samba night and a festival screening every evening through October 11 put live music and film within reach of more people. Other details are less open. Rio Scenarium didn't publish its cover charge in advance, and Circo Voador buyers are told to confirm prices at checkout. The optional serviço reminds visitors that consumer protections only help people who know they exist. A metro that closes around midnight leaves late-night travel to private cars. That matters to anyone weighing the cost of public cultural life, and who can afford it, in the days before Election Sunday.
