Rio Nightlife: R$30 Samba Entry, Festival Opens

A R$30 entry price gets visitors into Carioca da Gema’s Thursday samba night. Rio’s 28th Festival do Rio opens with screenings at cinemas across the city and in Niterói. The October 1 listings also include a tribute to lyricist Aldir Blanc, live sets at several venues and ticket prices that vary by event. They don’t provide figures for venue revenues, performers’ pay or profits.

Who pays to get in

Carioca da Gema, at Avenida Mem de Sá 79 in Lapa, charges R$30 from Tuesday through Thursday, about US$5.79. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., and the main samba de raiz show starts at 8:30 p.m., close to the tables. The venue’s page doesn’t name the act for that night. The article estimates that R$30 for entry plus about R$50 for drinks covers the visit, or about US$9.65 for the drinks amount cited.

At Circo Voador, Relentless Gods is listed for 8 p.m. Eventim lists a standing-floor concert. The article gives a reference range based on comparable recent shows: R$50 for half-price tickets, about US$9.65, and R$200 at full price, about US$38.60. It says to confirm the price at checkout.

Rio Scenarium, at Rua do Lavradio 20, lists three live sets beginning at 7 p.m. The venue announced the programme on Instagram, but it hasn’t published the cover charge in advance. The venue has three floors for samba and Brazilian classics, plus a DJ room upstairs. It had reopened after its Monday and Tuesday rest days.

Stages and schedules

Guinga, Moacyr Luz and Zé Renato perform at Teatro Rival Petrobras at 7:30 p.m. in a single session. The three musicians shared songs and stages with Blanc, the lyricist behind “O Bêbado e a Equilibrista.” The concert, also billed as “Aldir Blanc 80 Anos,” takes place at Rua Álvaro Alvim 33 near the Cinelândia metro. Sympla lists the tickets. This small historic venue off Cinelândia has presented Blanc’s repertoire for years.

The 28th Festival do Rio runs from October 1 through October 11, with 359 films and evening screenings at CineCarioca José Wilker, Cine Santa Teresa, Kinoplex São Luiz and Reserva Cultural in Niterói. Its programme includes premieres, retrospectives and Brazilian competition titles. RioMarket’s industry days run from October 1 to October 10. The festival programme page lists tickets and the schedule.

“Gonzaguinha É,” a musical about Gonzaguinha, runs Thursday through Sunday at Teatro Sesc Ginástico in Centro. Vivo Rio has no show on October 1; its next listed date is Marina Sena on Saturday, October 3.

Costs and city services

The article says cards and Pix are widely accepted, and small notes can help at street stalls. Seated bars usually add about 10% as serviço, which it describes as optional under Brazilian law and removable on request. The listings include no union activity, strike, public subsidy, wage figures or proposed reform.

INMET readings for October 1 range from 22°C to 31°C, with the evening expected to be in the mid-20s Celsius. The Banco Central PTAX closing sell rate for Wednesday, September 30, is listed as R$5.1809 to US$1. The metro closes around midnight, and the article recommends arranging a car from the venue door for late exits. Avenida Mem de Sá and Rua do Lavradio are described as lit and busy on show nights, while side streets empty late.

Election Sunday falls on October 4, three days after the listings. The article says the city was on a normal schedule on Thursday, with no holiday. The guide describes samba houses as having their week’s lowest entry prices on Thursday. Festival screenings continue every evening through October 11.
