Rio Nightlife: Festival, Samba and Aldir Blanc Tribute

Guinga, Moacyr Luz and Zé Renato take the stage at Teatro Rival Petrobras at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, for a tribute marking 80 years of Aldir Blanc. The three musicians shared songs and stages with Blanc, the lyricist behind “O Bêbado e a Equilibrista.” The concert, also billed as “Aldir Blanc 80 Anos,” takes place at Rua Álvaro Alvim 33, near the Cinelândia metro; tickets are listed on Sympla.

Tribute and festival opening

Teatro Rival Petrobras is a small historic room off Cinelândia, and it has presented Blanc’s repertoire for years. The tribute joins several other events listed across Centro and Lapa for Thursday night.

The 28th Festival do Rio opens October 1. It runs through October 11, with 359 films and evening screenings at cinemas including CineCarioca José Wilker, Cine Santa Teresa, Kinoplex São Luiz and Reserva Cultural in Niterói. The programme includes premieres, retrospectives and Brazilian competition titles. Tickets and the schedule appear on the festival programme page.

RioMarket’s industry days run from October 1 to October 10. Festival screenings continue every evening through October 11.

Samba and live music in Lapa

Carioca da Gema, at Avenida Mem de Sá 79 in Lapa, holds its regular Thursday samba night, with acoustic samba de raiz played close to the tables. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.; the main show begins at 8:30 p.m. The venue’s page doesn’t name the night’s act. Entry from Tuesday to Thursday costs R$30, about US$5.79, and visitors can buy tickets through its website.

Relentless Gods are listed at Circo Voador at 8 p.m. Eventim lists the show at the open-air concrete venue beneath the Arcos da Lapa. The concert takes place on a standing floor at a venue that has served as a midsize concert room since the 1980s. Comparable recent shows provide a reference range: R$50 for half-price tickets, about US$9.65, and R$200 full price, about US$38.60. The listing advises checking the price at checkout.

Rio Scenarium, at Rua do Lavradio 20 in the antique district, lists three live sets starting at 7 p.m. The venue announced the programme on Instagram, but didn’t publish its cover charge in advance. Across three floors, it presents samba and Brazilian classics, with a DJ room upstairs. The venue had reopened after its Monday and Tuesday rest days.

Other listings and practical details

“Gonzaguinha É,” a musical about Gonzaguinha, runs Thursday through Sunday at Teatro Sesc Ginástico in Centro. Vivo Rio has no show Thursday; its next date is Marina Sena on Saturday, October 3.

The evening is expected to be warm. INMET readings for October 1 range from 22°C (72°F) to 31°C (88°F), with evening temperatures expected in the mid-20s Celsius. The Banco Central PTAX closing sell rate for Wednesday, September 30, is R$5.1809 to US$1.

A budget estimate for Carioca da Gema puts entry at R$30, plus about R$50, or about US$9.65, for drinks. Cards and Pix are widely accepted, though small notes can help at street stalls. Seated bars usually add about 10% as serviço; the article says it’s optional under Brazilian law and customers can ask to have it removed.

The metro closes around midnight, and the listing recommends arranging a car from the venue door for late exits. Avenida Mem de Sá and Rua do Lavradio stay lit and busy on show nights, while side streets empty late. Election Sunday falls on October 4, three days after the listings; the city’s streets followed a normal schedule Thursday, with no holiday. That night, samba houses had the week’s lowest entry prices.
