Con Edison Worker Killed in Bridge Shooting

A 46-year-old off-duty Con Edison worker was shot and killed Tuesday night on the George Washington Bridge after a possible road-rage dispute, police suspect. The gunman fired through the worker’s car window, law enforcement sources said. The shooting shut down the bridge around 7 p.m.

The Shooting on the Bridge

The victim drove a blue Volkswagen Golf that nearly collided with another driver on an entrance ramp, according to video described by sources. Shortly afterward, someone shot out the car’s rear passenger window. The damage appeared to come from a single bullet.

Law enforcement sources told News 4 that the bullet appeared to strike the driver’s seat headrest before entering the victim’s body in the shoulder. The vehicle later hit a median and stopped. The suspect kept driving.

Investigators said late Tuesday that a road-rage dispute may have led to the shooting. Police haven’t announced that as a conclusion; it remains a suspected motive. The account available Wednesday morning didn’t identify the other driver or establish what happened between the two vehicles beyond the near collision shown in video.

Authorities hadn’t released the victim’s identity. They said they were working to identify his family. The account identified him as a 46-year-old off-duty Con Edison worker, but didn’t report where he worked, what work he performed, or whether he was traveling for a job when he was shot.

Police Search for the Gunman

Police were still seeking the gunman Wednesday morning. The NYPD hadn’t released a description of the suspected shooter, and the suspect’s identity remained unknown in the information made public.

Authorities stayed at the scene much of the night, searching for ballistics evidence and reviewing surveillance footage for information about the other vehicle. The investigation hadn’t produced a public account identifying the vehicle or its driver. Police have described the shooting as possibly connected to a road-rage dispute.

The bridge’s lanes reopened around 1 a.m. Wednesday, after the shooting shut down the crossing around 7 p.m. Both the closure and reopening occurred during the same overnight incident period. The article didn’t specify how many motorists were delayed or describe any other effects of the closure.

What the Report Establishes

The incident killed an off-duty worker, and investigators are focused on identifying the person who fired into his car and finding information about the other vehicle. Police haven’t released the victim’s identity, a description of the suspected shooter, or a confirmed motive. The available account doesn’t report a union response, a workplace statement, or any proposed policy change.

The confirmed sequence is narrow: video showed a near collision on the entrance ramp; a bullet shattered the rear passenger window; the driver was struck in the shoulder; the car hit a median and stopped; and the suspected shooter continued driving. Investigators are seeking evidence and reviewing surveillance footage. The worker’s family hadn’t been identified publicly, and police were still looking for the gunman Wednesday morning.
