NATO met on Wednesday to discuss these violations, concluding Russia bears “full responsibility” for the incidents. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte declared the incident “yet another reckless act by Russia and a dangerous consequence of its war against Ukraine.” NATO spokesperson Allison Hart confirmed allies expressed solidarity with Romania and Poland, condemning Russia for its “reckless actions.”
A readout from the meeting stated that “Allies reiterated that Russia bears full responsibility for the airspace violations, which are dangerous and unacceptable, and demonstrate Russia’s increasing tolerance for risk.” Allies also reiterated their support for Ukraine as Russia’s full-scale invasion grinds into a fifth year, affirming their commitment despite these irresponsible acts. Romania’s president Nicușor Dan described the Kremlin’s continued violation of his country’s skies as “inadmissible and intolerable.”
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk noted the armed unmanned aerial vehicle fell 50 kilometres away from the city of Lublin, identifying it as “probably” Russian. Romania’s Ambassador to NATO Dan Neculăescu used the meeting to stress the need for allies to boost military capabilities, allowing Bucharest and NATO to defend themselves more effectively. Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated the alliance showed clear solidarity and readiness for “new actions” to strengthen security, particularly along NATO’s frontline borders and the Baltic Sea.
Europe's Porous Skies
The meeting occurred as Germany and other European countries have repeatedly observed unmanned aerial vehicles flying over sensitive infrastructure sites. These include military bases, airports, and industrial plants, demonstrating a widespread vulnerability across the continent.
