State Security Kills Man Near White House Amid Calls for More Force

A 21-year-old man, Nasire Best, was shot and killed by U.S. Secret Service officers near a White House security checkpoint on Saturday evening, as the state mobilized a multi-agency law enforcement response to protect the executive mansion. The Secret Service confirmed that Best, who opened fire, died at a hospital after officers returned fire. A bystander was also struck by gunfire during the incident, which saw no officers injured.

The shooting unfolded shortly after 6 p.m. near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, outside the White House complex. The Secret Service reported that Best pulled a weapon from a bag and began firing. Accounts varied on the number of shots, with Fox News reporting approximately three shots toward the executive mansion, while other reports indicated as many as 30 shots were heard in the direction of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. President Donald Trump was present at the White House during the incident and was not impacted.

The State's Swift Hand

Following the initial shots, the White House grounds were placed on lockdown, and a multi-agency law enforcement response was initiated. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed his agency's presence, stating the FBI was "on the scene and supporting Secret Service responding to shots fired near White House grounds." The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) also responded, with the MPD cautioning the public to avoid the area. Reporters on the scene described hearing dozens of gunshots and were rushed inside by Secret Service agents shouting "get down."

Evidence of the shooting, including yellow crime scene tape and dozens of orange evidence markers, was visible on the sidewalk just outside the White House complex. Medical material, such as purple surgical gloves, was also observed. The swift and lethal response by state security forces underscored the primary function of these agencies: the protection of accumulated wealth and the symbols of power that facilitate its concentration.

A History of Desperation

Authorities identified the suspected gunman as Nasire Best, 21, of Dundalk, Maryland. Court records reveal Best had a history of interactions with the Secret Service outside the White House, indicating a pattern of individual desperation in proximity to the state's power center. Less than one year ago, on July 10, 2025, Best was charged in D.C. Superior Court with attempting to unlawfully enter 1699 State Place NW, an entry point to the White House complex. According to a police affidavit, Best allegedly stated he was Jesus Christ and wished to be arrested.

Less than one year ago, on June 26, 2025, Best was involuntarily committed by the Secret Service for allegedly obstructing vehicle entry to the White House complex at 15th Street and E Street. He was also detained on that date for flagging down agents and making threats. The Secret Service was reportedly familiar with Best, who allegedly walked around the White House complex inquiring how to gain access at various entry posts. These repeated, unorganized attempts to engage with the state apparatus highlight the profound alienation and lack of systemic support for individuals struggling under the current economic order.

Fortifying the Citadel of Capital

This incident marks the third incidence of gunfire in the vicinity of President Donald Trump within the same month. Less than one year ago, in November 2025, a gunman ambushed two members of the West Virginia National Guard near the same location, resulting in the death of U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and critical injury to Andrew Wolfe, then 24. Within the same year, on April 25, 2026, an attempted assassination of the president occurred at a Washington hotel. Just the same month, on May 4, 2026, Secret Service officers shot a suspect near the Washington Monument, wounding a teenage bystander.

In response to the latest shooting, President Trump posted on Truth Social the same day, thanking "our great Secret Service and Law Enforcement for the swift and professional action." He further stated that the shooting "underscored the need for stronger security protections around the White House." This call for increased state force and surveillance, rather than an examination of the social and economic conditions that produce such desperate acts, serves to further entrench the existing power structure and its mechanisms of control, reinforcing the state's role as the primary protector of capital's interests. Trump was reportedly working on the Iran peace process in the White House the same day, posting about a "largely negotiated" deal less than two hours before the shooting, underscoring the continuity of state functions despite the immediate crisis.
