SpaceX Rocket Hits Moon: 'Carelessness' of Elite Space Ventures

A floating piece of a SpaceX rocket slammed into the Moon yesterday at 8,690 kilometers an hour, after drifting off course for the past year. This uncontrolled impact, a direct consequence of discarded corporate hardware, was detected by a telescope in Chile, revealing a stream of debris. The European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope at Paranal Observatory confirmed glimmers of light associated with the impact. An ESO spokesperson stated, "We can confirm that the telescope detected spectral lines of sodium and lithium gas in the impact plume lasting for 5 to 10 minutes after impact." NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter probe and South Korea's Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter are planning to image the site, though information could take days to arrive.

The school-bus-sized object, weighing 4,000 kilograms, was the second stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. It had launched a lunar lander from Firefly Aerospace toward the Moon in January 2025, 1 year ago. The rocket body struck the Moon yesterday about 4:35pm AEST. This impact occurred near the Moon's terminator line, the boundary of its shadow between the sunlit side and its far side. The piece is understood to have hit near Einstein Crater on the Moon's western limb, a region often difficult to observe from Earth. Carl Schmidt, the lead astronomer conducting the impact observations, offered a "very crude analysis," noting the sodium gas likely came from lunar soil, while lithium traces may have originated from the rocket stage itself.

Elite Recklessness in Orbit

SpaceX's Julianna Scheiman stated this week that the company was working with NASA to track future wrecks. She stressed that this projected crash was not deliberate. Scheiman attributed the collision course with the Moon to a combination of solar activity and gravity. Bill Gray, creator of the widely used astronomy software Project Pluto, commented on the incident, saying, "This may be of some, probably minor, scientific interest, and we may learn some things from it." Gray had been confident of the impact by April, posting an announcement. He noted the impact presented no danger to anyone, but critically, "it does highlight a certain carelessness about how leftover space hardware [space junk] is disposed of." This "carelessness" from elite space ventures leaves a permanent mark on the lunar surface.

The Cost of Unchecked Ambition

This incident is not isolated. A Chinese rocket stage crashed into the Moon in March 2022, 4 years ago, after completing a lunar test mission. In 2009, 17 years ago, NASA intentionally crashed a rocket stage into the Moon to study the plume of lunar material, leading to a discovery of water ice. Several spacecraft attempting soft landings in recent years have also crashed. Russia's nuclear-powered Luna-25 mission spun out of control and crashed in 2023, 3 years ago, its plutonium-238 power source likely remaining harmlessly on the surface. India's Chandrayaan-2 lander mission crashed in 2019, 7 years ago. Israel's Beresheet lander also crashed that same year, 7 years ago, carrying microscopic tardigrades that may still be on the surface.

The US space agency, NASA, intentionally crashed stages from its Saturn V Moon rocket into the Moon in the 1970s to study seismic effects. Now, NASA plans to build a lunar base and send routine astronaut missions to the lunar surface beginning later this decade under its multi-billion-dollar Artemis program. It would not want errant pieces of space junk impacting those assets. The concern for its own future assets underscores the broader issue of accountability for the increasing volume of space debris generated by both state and private actors, impacting the shared celestial commons.
