Police Seek Witnesses After 12 Hurt Near FAMU

Twelve people, including six under 18, were injured in a shooting near Florida A&M University's Bragg Memorial Stadium during homecoming celebrations Saturday. Eleven people were wounded by gunfire, three victims had serious injuries, and the others had been stabilized, the Tallahassee Police Department said. No arrests were reported.

The violence happened at about 8 p.m. at an intersection adjacent to the stadium, after Florida A&M's Rattlers hosted the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions for the historically Black university's annual homecoming game. Those injured—including children—are bearing the immediate cost of a shooting that police say may have followed a fight. The investigation was ongoing.

The official response

Florida A&M issued a statement on X asking members of its campus community to stay away from the area. The university described the shooting as taking place "near campus" and said the campus was safe. It also said, "Our hearts are with the victims and everyone affected by tonight's incident on Perry Street."

Florida State University, about a mile from Florida A&M, issued an emergency alert about the violence. The university said it didn't appear that anyone from its school community was involved. Its message advised students, faculty and staff in the Tallahassee area to remain indoors that evening and stay alert, framing the instruction as a precaution.

The two universities issued statements and warnings; the police department handled the reported investigation. The account of the incident identifies no arrests and no community-organized response. It also reports no electoral or legislative proposals, and no nonprofit or other institutional aid to victims. The immediate public directions described were to avoid the area or remain indoors.

What police know—and don't

Police said early findings indicated that a physical altercation occurred before the shooting. The department said a fight may have preceded the gunfire, but it did not report an arrest or identify a suspect. Police asked witnesses to come forward as the investigation continued.

Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell offered condolences to victims and their families. "It is especially heartbreaking to know that children are among those injured," he said. His remarks named the youngest people caught in the violence, while the department's public account remained focused on the preliminary sequence and witness requests.

The reported details leave key questions unanswered: police have not announced arrests, and the investigation was ongoing. The department's request puts witnesses in the position of supplying information to investigators; the article gives no further details about what witnesses saw or what may have led to the physical altercation.

Homecoming under warning

The shooting unfolded during a major event on Florida A&M's campus calendar, after the homecoming game. The university's message sought to keep its community away from the area, while Florida State University directed its campus community to stay indoors and alert. Neither statement reported injuries among its own students or staff; Florida State University said it didn't appear anyone from its school community was involved.

For the people who were hurt, the central facts are stark: 12 were injured, six were under 18, and three had serious injuries. Police reported that the others had been stabilized. The investigation continued, with police asking witnesses to come forward and no arrests reported.
