The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology placed 25th worldwide in a new ranking measuring universities' capacity to advance artificial intelligence research, talent development, and entrepreneurship — outperforming institutions with budgets many times its size and securing the top position among European universities outside the UK.
The Israeli university ranked first nationally and fourth in Europe overall. It placed eighth globally for the number of graduates who go on to found AI companies, a metric where it outpaced Harvard and performed comparably to Stanford when adjusted for institutional size.
Competing With Elite Institutions on a Fraction of the Budget
The AI Production Capacity index, compiled by US public relations firm W5, ranks the world's top 50 universities by their influence on AI research and industry. The index evaluates alumni and faculty employment at leading AI companies, entrepreneurship rates, startup creation, venture funding, research output and quality, computing infrastructure, the depth of AI education, and how frequently universities are mentioned by generative AI systems.
Despite operating with significantly fewer resources than many of the world's largest and best-funded universities, the Technion outperformed several elite institutions in key areas. It ranked ahead of Harvard in two categories: the number of faculty members and graduates working in the AI industry, and the number of alumni who established AI companies. The university also achieved a stronger overall ranking than Duke, Northwestern, and the University of Pennsylvania, despite working with substantially smaller budgets.
Technion President Prof. Uri Sivan said the ranking was particularly significant given the gap in resources between the Technion and many leading institutions abroad. "Despite the dramatic disparity in resources between the Technion and leading American universities and other top institutions worldwide, the Technion has secured a place among the world's leading universities and at the top of the Israeli rankings," Sivan said.
Foundations in Machine Learning
"Technion researchers were among the pioneers of machine learning, helping lay the foundations for leadership in AI as a whole," Sivan added. He said the Technion's position was reflected not only in its research, but also in the growing role of AI across its academic programs and its ties with industry in Israel and abroad.
"AI tools are now essential in the workplace, and we ensure that our students acquire these skills alongside a strong foundation in mathematics, science, and engineering," he said.
Sivan noted that other international measures had produced similar results, including CSRankings, which placed the Technion first in Europe for the number of AI papers presented at leading international conferences. When adjusted for institutional size, the Technion's performance in alumni entrepreneurship was comparable to Stanford, which placed first overall in the W5 index.
"These achievements are the result of a long-term, carefully planned strategy made possible by the outstanding people who make up the Technion family: our faculty members and lecturers, leadership and staff, students, administrative teams, distinguished alumni, and, of course, our friends around the world," Sivan said.
