The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology placed 25th worldwide in a new index measuring universities' capacity to drive AI research, talent development, and entrepreneurship — a striking achievement for an institution operating with a fraction of the resources available to its American and European competitors. The Israeli university ranked first nationally, fourth in Europe, and eighth globally for producing graduates who go on to found AI companies.
The AI Production Capacity index, compiled by US public relations firm W5, ranks the world's top 50 universities by their influence on AI research and industry. It evaluates alumni and faculty employment at leading AI firms, entrepreneurship metrics, startup creation, unicorn development, venture funding, research output and quality, computing infrastructure, depth of AI education, and how often universities are cited by generative AI systems.
Outperforming Elite Rivals
Despite working with significantly fewer resources than many of the world's largest and best-funded universities, the Technion outperformed several elite institutions in key categories. It ranked ahead of Harvard in two areas: the number of faculty members and graduates working in the AI industry, and the number of alumni who established AI companies. When adjusted for institutional size, the Technion's performance in alumni entrepreneurship was comparable to Stanford, which placed first overall. The university also achieved a stronger overall ranking than Duke, Northwestern, and the University of Pennsylvania, despite operating with substantially smaller budgets.
Technion President Prof. Uri Sivan said the ranking was particularly significant given the resource gap between his institution and leading universities abroad. "Despite the dramatic disparity in resources between the Technion and leading American universities and other top institutions worldwide, the Technion has secured a place among the world's leading universities and at the top of the Israeli rankings," Sivan said. "Technion researchers were among the pioneers of machine learning, helping lay the foundations for leadership in AI as a whole."

Sivan said the Technion's position was reflected not only in its research output but also in the growing role of AI across its academic programs and its ties with industry in Israel and abroad. "AI tools are now essential in the workplace, and we ensure that our students acquire these skills alongside a strong foundation in mathematics, science, and engineering," he said.

CSRankings placed the Technion first in Europe for the number of AI papers presented at leading international conferences.
