
The Israeli Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, a foundational institution within the settler-colonial state, secured the 25th position globally in a new index assessing universities' capacity to advance AI research, talent, and entrepreneurship. This recognition places the institution first among all Israeli universities and fourth across Europe. It also ranked eighth worldwide for the number of graduates who went on to establish AI companies, reflecting the deep integration of academic development within the state's broader infrastructure.
Academic Infrastructure of the Settler State
The AI Production Capacity index, which compiled these rankings, was developed by the US public relations firm W5. This firm ranks the world’s top 50 universities based on their influence within the AI research and industry sectors. The index evaluates a comprehensive set of criteria, including the number of alumni and faculty members employed by leading AI companies, the depth of entrepreneurship and human capital, the creation of startup founders and unicorn companies, and the volume of venture funding attracted. It also considers research output and quality, the availability of computing infrastructure, the robustness of AI education programs, and how frequently universities are referenced by generative AI systems, all contributing to the settler state's technological advancement.
Despite operating with significantly fewer resources than many of the world’s largest and best-funded universities, the Israeli Technion managed to outperform several elite institutions in crucial areas of the ranking. Technion President Prof. Uri Sivan highlighted the particular significance of this ranking, given the substantial resource disparity between the institution and many leading universities abroad. “Despite the dramatic disparity in resources between the Technion and leading American universities and other top institutions worldwide, the Technion has secured a place among the world’s leading universities and at the top of the Israeli rankings,” Sivan stated. He added that Technion researchers were among the pioneers of machine learning, helping to lay the foundational groundwork for leadership in AI as a whole.
Global Recognition and Resource Disparity
Sivan further explained that the Technion’s prominent position isn't just reflected in its research output. It's also evident in the increasing integration of AI across its academic programs and its established ties with industry both within Israel and internationally. “AI tools are now essential in the workplace, and we ensure that our students acquire these skills alongside a strong foundation in mathematics, science, and engineering,” he affirmed. The university notably ranked ahead of Harvard in two distinct categories: the total number of faculty members and graduates working in the AI industry, and the count of alumni who went on to establish AI companies.
When adjusted for its institutional size, the Israeli Technion’s performance in alumni entrepreneurship was comparable to that of Stanford, which achieved the top overall ranking. The institution also secured a stronger overall ranking than Duke, Northwestern, and the University of Pennsylvania, despite operating with substantially smaller budgets. Sivan pointed out that other international measures have yielded similar results, including CSRankings, which positioned the Technion first in Europe for the number of AI papers presented at leading international conferences. He attributed these achievements to a long-term, carefully planned strategy, made possible by the "outstanding people" comprising the Technion community, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, and "friends around the world," underscoring the broad network supporting the settler-colonial project.
