Pakistan Teen Arrested for AI-Guided Poison Plot

Pakistan’s cybercrime authorities arrested a 17-year-old boy after he allegedly sought guidance from an artificial intelligence platform to poison his father. The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) confirmed the arrest. Information received from the FBI indicated the teenager's alleged plan. He reportedly used the AI platform Claude to research how to carry out the poisoning.

The NCCIA stated that the suspect was influenced by the popular US television series Breaking Bad. He asked various AI chatbots for information on how to produce methanol. An NCCIA investigating officer told the BBC that questioning of the suspect continues. The case remains under investigation. The arrest was made based on the suspect’s digital footprints, the officer added.

The Investigation Unfolds

Pakistan’s Foreign Affairs Ministry conveyed the FBI information to the NCCIA on September 22. This official communication initiated the First Information Report (FIR) in the case. The FIR detailed the user's extensive research. The Claude AI user had been conducting detailed research into lethal toxic substances. This included their use and potential effects.

Digital evidence shared with Pakistani authorities indicated an initial attempt. The user allegedly tried to poison his father by mixing laboratory-grade methanol into his food. This attempt failed. Following this, he reportedly sought further information from the AI. He inquired about abrin, a toxic substance derived from rosary peas.

Investigators seized an iPhone 15 Pro Max during a search of the suspect’s home. They also found methanol, ethylene glycol, hydrochloric acid, potassium hydroxide, and sodium hydroxide. The FIR identified these substances as potential chemicals for preparing poison.

The preliminary report from the FBI included the email address linked to the account. It also provided information on multiple IP addresses to Pakistani authorities. NCCIA Lahore used these details. They began tracing the suspect digitally. His identity was verified through the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) system.

Sourcing and Alleged Attempts

The suspect allegedly sourced chemicals from Australia and Islamabad. He then prepared a poisonous mixture at his home. An NCCIA spokesperson reported that the teenager administered the substance to his father on one occasion. However, this alleged poisoning attempt was unsuccessful.

NCCIA director Hassam Bin Iqbal noted the suspect’s interest in chemistry. His initial aim was to experiment with producing biodiesel from methanol. He planned to use sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide in this process. “After that, the suspect turned to AI and asked what reaction methanol would cause in the human body if ingested, and what effects it would have on the liver,” Iqbal explained.

This case highlights a growing concern. It points to the misuse of artificial intelligence. Young users, in particular, may turn to AI tools for information. Such information can have serious real-world consequences. This incident underscores the urgent need for responsible AI development and usage.
