Real Madrid Parks a €10m Footballer on the Bench

Real Madrid paid 10m euros (£8.33m) last summer to pry Trent Alexander-Arnold loose from Liverpool early, rather than wait for his contract to expire and take him for nothing. Now the full-back is third choice at right-back, and his name is on the January rumour list.

That's the transfer market in miniature. A person is a line item, bought at a premium for a tournament, then shelved when the squad sheet gets crowded. Alexander-Arnold, 28, has a contract until 2031 and has played in seven of Real's 13 games this season. Four starts. One assist, in a 4-0 home win over Malaga. He didn't play against Roma, Sevilla or RB Leipzig, and he got a couple of stoppage-time minutes in the Clasico.

The Price Tag and the Pecking Order

The club made its hunger plain last summer. The early release was paid for so he'd be available for the Club World Cup, which is one way to say the tournament came before the man. He arrived in June 2025, delivered his welcome speech in Spanish and called the move a "dream come true". "I'm very happy and proud to be here. I'm eager to show the club and the fans what I can do," he said.

The signing was meant to slot into a succession plan at right-back, cover for Dani Carvajal and eventually replace him. Then Denzel Dumfries arrived from Inter Milan this summer, and manager Jose Mourinho began starting Fede Valverde, normally a midfielder, in the position. Dumfries, the first-choice right-back according to former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, still came off the bench in the Clasico.

Management Roulette

His first season produced 21 La Liga appearances out of a possible 38, with 14 starts. A hamstring problem in September and a thigh injury in December broke up his campaign, and a muscle issue in pre-season had already interrupted his preparations. Then the dugout turned over: Xabi Alonso left, Alvaro Arbeloa came in, and neither tenure brought the consistency Real wanted. Mourinho is now trying to find the right balance in a squad packed with talent. A worker adapting to new bosses on a rolling basis, then judged on the results.

Mourinho, asked about January, gave the standard managerial line. "First of all, it hurts me. I don't like to make players feel bad. I want them to feel good," he said. "But there are things that are more important than these feelings. Things that are more important for the team at a given moment." He added: "I was thinking about the team, not the players. Trent and Dumfries took it well when I explained that it was a decision for the team and not against the players."

The team comes first. The individual is the instrument. At his August news conference Mourinho had said, "It is not possible to think that one will play 60 games and the other none." Four games into a slide that has produced almost no minutes, the arithmetic looks different.

The Market Speaks

Carragher put the logic bluntly on The Overlap. "When you're third choice at a club, they're obviously wanting you to move on." He said he'd have Alexander-Arnold back at Liverpool, though he'd "get a lot of criticism" because he "made a big mistake going to Madrid." And: "We've definitely missed his creativity."

The pressure runs in two directions. England manager Thomas Tuchel announces his next squad on 6 November, five days from now, ahead of Nations League fixtures against Croatia and Spain. Alexander-Arnold was recalled in September after an absence dating back to June 2025, but with strong competition at right-back, a lack of club minutes could count against him. Tuchel has a decision to make.

Three games remain before the international break, two in the league and one in the Champions League. That's the window. A footballer's worth, in this system, is measured in minutes, fees and selection sheets, and the player rarely holds the pen.
