President Donald Trump announced Friday he would ban reporters from POLITICO, CNN, and MS NOW from the White House. This move, posted on Truth Social, marks a direct assault by the state on the flow of information. Trump claimed these outlets "constantly write or report FICTION and LIES" when covering his administration and the United States. He stated more "Fake News Media Outlets" would follow, justifying the block as a result of their "constant 'reporting' FAKE NEWS!"
Trump offered no further elaboration beyond telling reporters in the Oval Office that it was "fake news" and "cumulative stories" driving his decision. POLITICO responded, stating it "will continue to fairly report on this White House and future ones" and would "vigorously defend our First Amendment rights against any attempt to restrict them." CNN echoed this, asserting it "stands fully behind our White House team and their fair and accurate reporting." The network added that a ban would constitute "an illegal assault on that fundamental and constitutionally-protected right." MS NOW declined to comment on the state's action.
State Control of Information
This isn't an isolated incident; it's the latest escalation in the state's ongoing effort to manage public perception. Last February, the White House blocked Associated Press reporters from the Oval Office and Air Force One. This occurred after the AP refused to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in its style guide. The AP subsequently sued the White House to regain its access. Last October, the White House also barred reporters from a West Wing office used by communications staff. Early in Trump’s second term, the administration seized control over the management of the White House pool rotation, a function long handled by the White House Correspondents’ Association. These actions reveal a consistent pattern of the state apparatus attempting to dictate media operations and content.
Jacqui Heinrich, president of the WHCA and a Fox News correspondent, criticized the ban. She stated, "The president said it plainly in the Oval Office, describing his own planned action as a 'ban on the free press.'" Heinrich emphasized that the Constitution protects press freedom from government interference, regardless of whether the president approves of a news organization's coverage or questions. The White House Correspondents’ Association did not respond to POLITICO’s request for comment regarding the ban.
Economic Leverage and Narrative Management
Trump also attacked POLITICO with a false claim that "the government under Biden gave them like $8 million to keep them afloat." This revived a tactic from 2025 when Trump’s administration canceled subscriptions to the POLITICO Pro policy news service, using economic leverage to punish a media outlet. POLITICO countered, confirming that "The claims that POLITICO received government subsidies are false and have been thoroughly debunked." The state's attempts to control the narrative extend beyond direct bans, utilizing financial pressure and disinformation to discredit and weaken critical voices. This serves to protect the interests of the ruling class by shaping the information environment.
