President Donald Trump was abruptly removed from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, DC, on Saturday following a security incident that saw law enforcement respond and one individual taken into custody, exposing the vulnerability of national leadership at a high-profile elite gathering.
Secret Service agents and other law enforcement personnel swiftly escorted the President off stage and out of the Washington Hilton ballroom where the event was being held. Trump was subsequently moved to a secure location.
Fox News reported that the FBI informed the network a gunman stormed through the main magnetometer near the entrance of the ballroom and opened fire. This report further stated that a Secret Service agent was hit in the vest but was in stable condition, and that a counter-assault team neutralized the threat.
Secret Service confirmed the suspect was in custody and worked to determine if any other threats existed, concluding there were none after an assessment.
Attendees described hearing shouting, shots fired, and several people taking cover under tables as Secret Service agents escorted the President, the First Lady, Cabinet secretaries, and others at the head table out of the room. Agents moved into position at the head table with weapons drawn as they scanned the room.
CNN reported President Donald Trump was swiftly escorted off the stage by Secret Service after possible shots were fired at the dinner. Vice President JD Vance and members of Trump’s Cabinet, who were also in attendance, were simultaneously rushed out of the event.
According to pool reports cited by CNN, several US Secret Service agents yelled, “shots fired” during the incident at the Washington Hilton.
President Trump initially told officials he intended to return to the dinner from his secure location, according to a senior administration official. He later stated he was returning to the White House after law enforcement officials requested his departure, and said he would give a press conference momentarily.
On Truth Social, President Trump shared that a “shooter has been apprehended” and applauded Secret Service and law enforcement officers for acting “quickly and bravely.”
Conflicting Accounts Emerge
Secret Service chief spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi issued a statement confirming an investigation into a shooting incident near the main magnetometer screening area at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Guglielmi’s statement affirmed the President, the First Lady, and all protectees were safe, with one individual in custody, and that law enforcement was actively assessing the situation.
Fox News quoted Rep. Suhas Subramanyam, D-Va., who was at the dinner, describing security personnel running through the escalators and yelling “watch out for crossfire.” Subramanyam stated he got behind a pillar before slowly exiting a back exit while hearing more commotion and police.
Fox News’ Bret Baier recounted his experience, stating, “I was really concerned. I heard shots and everyone jumped down.” He added that “within seconds the place was filled with Secret Service agents, guns drawn.”
CNN’s Wolf Blitzer stated he was “a few feet away from (a gunman) as he was shooting” and described the weapon as “a very, very serious weapon.”
The Elite Gathering's Vulnerability
White House officials told Fox News Digital that President Trump, the First Lady, and Karoline Leavitt were safe at the time of the incident. An administration official confirmed to CNN that Cabinet members were also safe.
Protesters had gathered outside the Washington Hilton earlier in the evening, though it remained unclear whether these two events were connected to the security incident inside the venue.
