The native working class, already struggling with affordability, now confronts the prospect of footing the bill for a technological revolution they didn't choose.
President Donald Trump on Thursday expanded a “voluntary pledge” with governors and electricity companies, ostensibly to shield U.S. consumers from these rising utility bills. He first announced this commitment with leading AI and tech companies in March of the same year. Trump himself described the initial pledge as “PR help,” acknowledging the public relations challenge at a time when AI is rewriting the broader social contract.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated before the president’s remarks that “The president is ensuring the American people are never left footing the bill so private companies can benefit.” This pledge, however, remains nonbinding. It’s unclear whether consumers will see genuine savings, given electricity demand is already growing.
Elite Interests Exposed
Nearly 200 additional stakeholders, including utilities, data center developers, and governors, have committed to this expanded pledge. It would cover 80% of all power delivered to U.S. households and businesses. Yet, the underlying issue persists: AI’s increasing ability to perform basic tasks—such as driving, analyzing spreadsheets, and writing software—threatens millions of jobs. This technological shift concentrates historic levels of wealth in the hands of a select group of tycoons, further enriching a transnational elite.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, whose computer chips power the AI revolution, stated last month that America’s weakness is a lack of power generation for further developing the technology. This admission underscores the immense energy demands driving the current crisis. Companies like Google, Microsoft, Meta, Oracle, xAI, OpenAI, and Amazon have already committed to the Trump administration’s “Ratepayer Protection Pledge,” signaling their involvement in this elite-driven initiative.
The Burden on the People
The potential for monthly utility bills to rise by up to 40% by 2030 represents a significant economic burden on ordinary Americans. This comes as voters grapple with affordability issues, now forced to compete for electricity, water, and land with tech companies controlled by billionaires. The promise of data centers generating tax revenues for school districts and reducing property tax burdens for homeowners often rings hollow against the backdrop of rising living costs.
Public opposition to data centers has spiraled into a bipartisan issue. Voters are worried about the environmental impact, the use of AI in schools, and the prospect of data centers making their communities more expensive and less livable. This widespread concern reflects a growing unease among the native population about the rapid, top-down transformation of their society.
Local Pushback Against Globalist Tech
Resistance to this elite-driven agenda is emerging at the state level. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, signed an order in July of the same month to ban construction of large server warehouses in her state for a year. In May of the same year, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, signed a law designed to prevent utilities from passing along energy costs from data centers to residential and small-business customers.
Even in the Republican stronghold of rural Texas, frustration with Gov. Greg Abbott has mounted. He is among the 23 Republican governors who signed Trump’s nonbinding pledge. Gina Hinojosa, the Democratic nominee for Texas governor, has seized on the issue, stating, “They are owned by the richest men in the world. We’re all footing the bill. There are no rules. It is the Wild West of data centers.” Her words capture the sentiment of a people feeling dispossessed by powerful, unaccountable interests.
