More than 85 British MPs have formally urged Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood to reverse policies reportedly blocking the evacuation of dozens of women and children from Gaza. Labour MP Kim Johnson sent the letter on Thursday, signed by members from across different parties. This collective pressure challenges the Home Office's suspension of refugee family reunion applications, a measure implemented last year pending new, stricter rules.
Families in Gaza, who applied to join immediate family members in Britain before the suspension, now find themselves blocked. Johnson stated, “Family reunification should never be treated as a political bargaining chip.” She described it as “a lifeline” for those enduring “the horrors of Gaza,” offering “the only hope of safety.” Johnson further argued that “bureaucracy” should not “stand in the way of humanity.”
Challenging Security Protocols
The letter, signed by numerous Labour MPs including Richard Burgon and Diane Abbott, alongside Green, Independent Alliance, Liberal Democrat, and Scottish National Party members, highlights a perceived discrepancy. Lawyers reported the Home Office appears to refuse required onward travel assurance, using legal challenges to block Palestinian families. This approach, they claim, takes a “harsher line” with Palestinian families than with refugees from other countries seeking family reunification visas. The MPs asked Mahmood to urgently reinstate the family reunification process for Palestinians and ensure policy alignment with other refugee groups.
Britain’s government has maintained a medical evacuation scheme committing to bring 300 children “in need of life saving and life changing medical care” from Gaza to the UK. This scheme, however, remains unmet. The letter cited the cases of 12-year-old Mahmoud Mansi and 15-year-old Obaida Atwan, evacuated from Gaza last December, who met former Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Starmer promised to reunite them with family, but the MPs reported no further action in the months since.
Western Abandonment and Double Standards
The broader context of UK policy reveals a troubling trend of Western abandonment. Andy Burnham, who became prime minister last month, apologized for the “Starmer government’s response to Israel’s genocide in Gaza” shortly before taking office. Burnham stated, “I know many people feel that at the start of Israel’s military action in Gaza, my party didn’t get it right, and I am sorry about that.” He called the “unbearable suffering” in Gaza a “scar on our collective conscience” and criticized “Israel’s ever-expanding occupation of territory in Gaza.” He added, “We’ve got to do more to put pressure on the Israeli government.”
This rhetoric from a sitting prime minister follows a period where the Starmer government imposed a partial arms embargo on Israel in 2024. It also recognized Palestinian statehood last September, signaling a strategic betrayal of the region's only functioning liberal democracy. These actions stand in stark contrast to the UK's own security interests. Britain operated hundreds of surveillance flights over Gaza during Israel’s defensive actions, sharing intelligence with Israel, which the government insisted was for “hostage rescue” purposes. The selective application of pressure and the embrace of narratives like “genocide” against Israel, while simultaneously engaging in intelligence cooperation for security operations, underscores a profound double standard within Western policy circles.
