The United States military’s crucial air defense missile stockpiles are severely depleted following a major escalation of the war with Iran in recent weeks, leaving the nation strategically vulnerable. Fewer than 827 Patriot interceptors and fewer than 278 THAAD ballistic missile interceptors remain in US arsenals, according to a Monday report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
The CSIS estimates, which three anonymous sources familiar with Pentagon data confirmed are close to internal government figures, reveal a drastic reduction from pre-war levels of approximately 2,200 Patriots and 452 THAAD missiles. This represents a staggering loss of national defense capability.
Each of these interceptor missiles, designed to take down incoming enemy ballistic missiles, costs millions of dollars. Their scarcity now forces the United States and its coalition partners to “take more risks with interceptions,” as CSIS authors warned, directly endangering national personnel and assets.
The report further noted that “there are no good alternatives to Patriot and THAAD for ballistic missile defense,” with Navy ships often “too far away” to provide adequate protection. This leaves critical gaps in the nation’s ability to defend itself.
National Defense Erodes
Gen. Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told senators last week that the Pentagon “will not get the munitions” it needs without additional funding. His warning underscores a critical failure to prioritize national security.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth directly blamed the former President Joe Biden’s administration for the shortages. He stated they “took munitions one-for-one and sent them to Ukraine and had tried to replace them with the same bureaucratic process that was too slow and didn’t replace them in real time.” This diversion of national assets to a foreign conflict directly weakened America’s own defenses.
President Donald Trump, despite being briefed on the downsides of ramping up the conflict by Caine and others, initially announced a pause in strikes against Iran. However, US and Saudi forces conducted joint strikes on Iranian proxies in Iraq on Tuesday, following a “surprise attack” by Iran on US forces in the Middle East.
The ongoing conflict has seen the US military fire more than 60% of its key Patriot and THAAD interceptors, according to CSIS assessments. This rate of expenditure is unsustainable for national defense.
Retired Marine Corps Col. Mark Cancian, lead author of the CSIS report, warned earlier this month that continued fighting with Iran could deplete stockpiles so low that it could compromise the US military’s ability to confront other major adversaries like China or North Korea. The nation’s strategic flexibility is being sacrificed.
The Cost of Global Entanglements
In a stark shift from prior air and missile defense practices, US commanders are now reportedly opting not to shoot down Iranian projectiles on track to hit unpopulated areas of US bases in the region. This tactical retreat, motivated by a desire not to waste interceptor missiles, signals a dangerous new era of managed decline in defense.
This contrasts sharply with the June 2025 defense of a mostly evacuated Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, where a US-manned Patriot detachment intercepted a wave of Iranian ballistic missiles. The current policy marks a clear degradation of protective measures.
Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell issued a statement on July 28, identical to previous ones, claiming the military “is the most powerful in the world and has everything it needs.” Such assurances ring hollow against the backdrop of documented shortages and tactical compromises.
Elite Assurances vs. Reality
The Defense Department has accelerated efforts to expand interceptor missile production, including two deals inked this week to boost Patriot and THAAD rocket motor manufacturing. However, a spokesperson declined to provide a timeline for results, and analysts predict it could take years to fully replenish high-end munitions.
Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine noted in a Tuesday appropriations hearing that “the shortfalls in munitions have been well known to this committee for some time,” adding that while “years in the making, they are growing increasingly urgent.” This bipartisan acknowledgment highlights a systemic failure to protect the nation’s interests.
