Yankees’ Machine Sends Domínguez to Injured List

Who Pays When the Game Demands More

Jasson Domínguez is headed to the injured list after spraining his left shoulder when he crashed into Yankee Stadium’s outfield wall while making a leadoff catch in the first inning of the Yankees’ 9-2 win over Texas on Thursday, May 7, 2026, in New York. Eight pitches into the game, Domínguez ran 81 feet to catch Brandon Nimmo’s 101 mph shot, gloved the ball 375 feet from the plate, and hit the wall hard as his shoulder struck a video advertising board. Fox News said Domínguez was carted off the field in tears after the collision.

The body at the bottom of the hierarchy took the impact first. Domínguez, 23, sat up after about a minute, pointed to his shoulder, craned his neck while being examined, then walked to a cart under his own power before being seated as it drove away. His MRI showed a low grade AC sprain of his left shoulder, and initial concussion tests were negative.

The Cost of the Outfield Wall

New York manager Aaron Boone said, “That’ll put him on the IL, and that could be a few weeks.” Boone also said, “He seemed decent when we got out there and coherent and all that,” and later added, “Gosh, he’s just such a good kid,” saying, “There’s a joy he kind of walks to every day no matter what’s going on. He’s very consistent in who he is. They love him in there. We’ve talked a lot recently about just how well he’s handled his situation here over the last four and five months.”

Domínguez’s injury came after he was brought up April 27 after Giancarlo Stanton strained a calf muscle. He was playing outfield for the Yankees for the second time this season after seven games as a designated hitter. The club’s roster churn keeps moving bodies around, and the people on the field absorb the consequences.

Domínguez made a sensational debut in September 2023, hitting .258 with four homers and seven RBIs in eight games before a scan revealed a torn right UCL. His 2024 season was slowed by a strained right oblique sustained on a swing, then he struggled offensively and defensively with the Yankees last year and started this season at Scranton.

The Next Body Waiting in the Pipeline

New York intends to call up Spencer Jones before Friday’s series opener at Milwaukee, a person familiar with the team’s decision told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the move had not been announced. Jones, a 6-foot-7 outfielder, was selected by the Yankees 25th overall in the 2022 amateur draft.

Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger said, “It’s a large man that hits the ball very far.” Jones, 24, leads the minor leagues with 41 RBIs, batting .258 with 11 homers, 18 walks and 41 strikeouts for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He was not in the RailRiders’ lineup Thursday night at Worcester.

Boone said, “He’s put himself in the mix,” and, “The signs have been encouraging.” He also said, “Got off to an OK start, but then hit a little snag there for about a week or so,” and, “The last three, four weeks been having a lot of consistent at-bats, the power’s been there, less swing and miss.”

The apparatus keeps its wheels turning: one player goes down, another is summoned, and the machine carries on. Boone, head athletic trainer Tim Lentych, assistant athletic trainer Jimmy Downam and director of sports medicine and rehabilitation Michael Schuk all came out as Domínguez lay on the warning track. Center fielder Trent Grisham also came over while Boone jogged out to check on him. The scene ended with Domínguez being carted away, the game and its demands already moving on.
