Iran-backed Houthi forces launched attacks on Saudi Arabia, targeting the capital Riyadh, as the UN Security Council condemned the aggression and backed Riyadh’s right to self-defense.
Saudi Arabia issued alerts overnight warning of potential danger around Riyadh and the city of Al-Kharj east of the capital. These warnings preceded an all-clear issued on Saturday morning. Reuters video and photographs captured a huge pillar of black smoke rising near King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. Flames were distinctly visible, ascending from behind what appeared to be fuel tanks.
A Reuters journalist, present in Riyadh’s Olaya area, reported hearing multiple booms before the all-clear was officially sent across the capital. The Jerusalem Post further reported that the smoke remained visible near Riyadh airport even after the all-clear, confirming these events unfolded amid ongoing Houthi attacks. The Saudi government’s media office offered no immediate comment in response to Reuters questions concerning the smoke and the overnight alerts.
Iran's Proxy War and Regional Destabilization
The Houthi offensive has triggered a significant humanitarian crisis, leading to large-scale displacement across Yemen. Arab News documented that at least 125,000 people have been displaced nationwide since the "start of September 2026". The Jerusalem Post, citing data from UN agencies, detailed that approximately 112,000 individuals were displaced internally within Yemen. Additionally, thousands more sought refuge by fleeing to Djibouti, highlighting the regional impact of the conflict.
International Institutions and Shifting Security Postures
The UN Security Council’s condemnation of Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia represents an acknowledgment of the persistent threat posed by Iran's proxy network. The Council explicitly backed Riyadh’s inherent right to self-defense against these aggressions.
In a separate but related development concerning regional security, the UN peacekeeping chief in Lebanon, Major General Diodato Abagnara, confirmed UNIFIL was actively collaborating with the UN’s country team. This collaboration aims to ensure humanitarian assistance in areas from which the peacekeeping force is slated to withdraw. Major General Abagnara's statement highlights UNIFIL's ongoing work as its operational footprint changes.
