Just two days ago, Russian missile strikes on the Kyiv region reportedly killed at least 10 people and injured around 100 more. These attacks targeted an arms exhibition where representatives of the Ukrainian defence industry were present, demonstrating the direct impact of the war on vital infrastructure and personnel.
Further casualties were reported in Slovyansk, where five people died following guided aerial bomb strikes. The Latvian consulate in Slovyansk also sustained damage in these attacks, underscoring the broad reach of the conflict and its disregard for international diplomatic presence.
Brussels' Diplomatic Posturing
Kaja Kallas, the European Union's top diplomat, issued a statement on social media, asserting that the strike on the consulate "underscores Moscow’s utter disregard for international law." She added that "Latvia has our full support." On Saturday, Ukrainian forces confirmed they had carried out strikes on a weapons facility in Kirov the previous night. Ukraine also targeted an oil refinery in Tyumen, a logistics facility in Yekaterinburg, and a fuel and lubricants depot in Rostov-on-Don, demonstrating its own offensive capabilities.
Zelenskyy further stated that "very strong results" were achieved with long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea, including against vessels used in military cargo shipments involving Iran, as well as a warship. He shared video footage appearing to show the aftermath of some of these strikes, indicating an expansion of the conflict's operational theatre.
The Cost of External Dependence

Four days ago, Zelenskyy confirmed speaking with US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, about efforts to energize diplomacy and bring peace closer. Earlier this week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the ASEAN foreign ministers' summit in the Philippines. According to the Kremlin, Lavrov used the meeting to warn Washington against continuing arms sales to Kyiv, emphasizing the ongoing geopolitical struggle.
Rubio confirmed a "good," "frank" conversation but declined to elaborate, stating that the US sells arms via PURL, an initiative through NATO, and that there has been "no change to our policy in that regard." He added: "We want a peace deal. We want the war to end."
