
Airbnb's stock jumped 15% Friday on the strength of one of its best quarters in years, with CEO Brian Chesky crediting artificial intelligence for the company's turnaround and signaling the company will spend substantially more on AI infrastructure than originally planned.
The numbers tell the story. Chesky said Airbnb is cutting product-development time by roughly 60%, shipping about 80% more features year over year, and keeping headcount roughly flat even as AI spending rises sharply. That's the kind of efficiency gain that Wall Street rewards—and that shareholders should watch closely.
"I think now it's safe to say AI is the best thing to have happened to Airbnb," Chesky said in an exclusive CNBC interview. "I think we're becoming an AI-native company, and I think that is probably the number one explanation for our results."
The Productivity Shift
Just a year ago, Chesky acknowledged, the internal debate was straightforward: Is AI good for Airbnb or bad for Airbnb? That question's been answered. The company hired Ahmad Al-Dahle, Meta's former head of generative AI, as chief technology officer in January. Al-Dahle came with a mandate to transform Airbnb into an AI-native operation after the company was "maybe middle of the pack in AI."
The results are spreading across the organization. Chesky said teams across engineering, product management, design, marketing, and creative services are "significantly more productive." Internally, Airbnb tracks employee token usage and team output, finding gains that have exceeded his expectations. "I have so underestimated the impact of AI," he said.
That productivity gain translates directly to the bottom line. Revenue per employee should continue rising as the company grows revenue "a lot faster" than staffing. This is the kind of operational leverage that defines competitive advantage—doing more with the same number of people, not through layoffs but through smarter tools.
Where AI Creates Real Value
Airbnb's AI applications span the customer journey. The company is piloting AI-powered search, using AI to generate personalized listing highlights and answers for guests, and helping hosts create and price listings more efficiently. On the customer-service side, 45% of guests who interact with Airbnb's AI agent never need to speak with a human agent—a significant cost reduction that doesn't sacrifice quality.
"It's really across the board: More demand, more supply, cheaper customer service," Chesky said.
The economics make sense. While many consumer companies struggle to justify inference costs against revenue, Airbnb operates under different constraints. Chesky noted that "the amount of money we make on every booking" dwarfs the cost of AI inference. Combined with revenue gains from faster product development, the math is compelling. "We are going to spend a lot more on AI tokens this year than we forecasted," he said. "But that's great because the ROI is there, and therefore our revenue is much higher."
Strategic Choices on Technology
Airbnb isn't throwing money at every AI model indiscriminately. The company uses more than a dozen AI models internally, including Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex, but carefully throttles access to slower, more expensive models when cheaper alternatives suffice. Chesky is particularly bullish on open-source models for consumer-facing products while reserving frontier models for the hardest problems.
"Consumers mostly do not need frontier models for most things," Chesky said. "It's a matter of throttling the right job for the right tool."
This disciplined approach—spending where returns justify the cost, using efficient tools where they work—reflects sound business judgment. It's the opposite of the speculative AI spending that's driven valuations to unsustainable levels at some tech companies.
Chesky also pushed back on the notion that chatbots will replace Airbnb's platform. Travel is visual and collaborative, he said, and the traditional chat interface remains weak for those use cases. Chatbots will help with inspiration and itinerary building, but he doesn't see them becoming major booking platforms "in the coming future." That's a reality check worth noting—AI enhances existing platforms; it doesn't automatically disrupt them.
Growth Momentum
The operational improvements are already showing in growth metrics. First-time bookers are growing at the fastest pace in four years. The U.S. business accelerated from the first quarter. Hotels are growing three times faster than traditional home listings as Airbnb expands beyond its core business.
Chesky was direct about the company's trajectory: "We are not a company whose best days were in the 2010s. We are a company where the best days are in front of us."
