Alphabet unveiled its Pixel 11 smartphone lineup on Wednesday, positioning artificial intelligence at the core of the device strategy just as component shortages force the entire industry to raise prices. The company is banking on Gemini Intelligence—a suite of AI features designed to understand what users are doing and take action across apps—to justify the cost increases ahead.
The new lineup includes the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold. Google's pitch centers on Gemini Intelligence's ability to connect information from messages, calendars, maps, and other Google services, then suggest or execute next steps like checking availability, comparing travel options, or beginning restaurant reservations. The company is also embedding AI features directly into the phone's operating system rather than requiring users to open a standalone chatbot.
Rick Osterloh, Google's devices chief, told CNBC that AI could fundamentally reshape how people interact with smartphones. "For the last 10 to 15 years, not a lot has changed in how you use laptops and mobile phones," Osterloh said. "But we think that's about to change dramatically." He described Gemini Intelligence as "a totally new way to interact with a computer," using capabilities that allow users "not only to find out information but to get things done."
The Competitive Squeeze
Google finds itself in an unusual position: competing directly with Apple, one of its largest AI customers. Apple is rebuilding Siri around Google's Gemini models with similar objectives—understanding personal information, recognizing what appears on screen, and taking actions across apps. When asked whether Pixel offers Google an early advantage to showcase this model before it reaches iPhone users, Osterloh rejected the comparison. "I think obviously Pixel and iPhone are going in very different directions," he said. "It's always been at the forefront of Pixel's product strategy to lead with new technologies, and in particular with Gemini and AI."
Osterloh highlighted features like scam detection, Rambler voice transcription technology, and deeper Gemini integration across Android as distinguishing factors. "All these things are unique to Android and Gemini Intelligence," he said. "So I think these are things you're going to want to get a Pixel or an Android phone to try to experience."
The real question remains whether increasingly capable AI justifies consumer upgrades. Osterloh acknowledged that AI isn't yet the primary reason people buy new phones, though it's climbed the priority list. Counterpoint Research found that AI currently ranks around sixth or seventh among upgrade reasons, but has gained one to two positions in recent surveys as Gemini and Apple Intelligence matured. Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint, said compelling use cases and greater consumer awareness will be critical to converting interest into actual sales. He expects Apple Intelligence to drive iPhone upgrades, noting Apple already has more generative AI-capable smartphones in consumers' hands than any competitor.
The Cost Reality
Beneath the AI innovation narrative sits a harder economic problem. A shortage of memory components—both RAM and flash memory—is pushing hardware costs higher across the industry. Osterloh didn't mince words about the implications. "There's quite clearly a shortage of memory, both RAM memory and flash memory," he told CNBC. He said the squeeze is forcing consumer electronics companies to raise prices and indicated Google expects additional pressure on its own devices. "What's happening in the near term, I think, is everyone's needing to raise their prices," Osterloh said. "We've also discussed that we will need to raise ours, like all the other industry players."
Google ultimately envisions Gemini becoming far more central to device usage. "We think that it's going to grow in importance and perhaps someday become the primary way that people use their phones, their laptops and other devices," Osterloh said. That vision, however, will be tested against rising costs and consumer skepticism about whether the technology justifies premium pricing in an increasingly crowded market.
