
After years of collapsing prices and climate shocks drove Zimbabwe's cotton sector into steep decline, hybrid seed technology is giving smallholder farmers a path back to economic stability. Growers report higher yields, better pest resistance, and renewed income—reversing a trend that saw national production plummet from 350,703 tonnes in 2010/11 to around 28,000–29,000 tonnes in 2025.
Aleck Bikostone, 56, has farmed cotton in Chinhoyi for more than two decades. He managed to send all four of his children through school on cotton income. But falling prices—from US$1.35 to just US$0.35 per kilogram—nearly broke his household. "Imagine having spent so much money on the crop, and in return, there is nothing tangible," Bikostone said. He switched from Open-Pollinated Varieties to hybrid seeds. The results, he said, worked wonders. "With enough support and viable prices, many farmers will return to cotton production because it can significantly improve household incomes."
A Sector in Freefall
Zimbabwe was once one of Africa's leading cotton producers. According to Stewart Mubonderi, national chairman of the Cotton Producers and Marketers Association of Zimbabwe, the government supported up to 400,000 cotton farmers at the household level, though that number has fallen to 350,000 in recent years. Production collapsed by more than 90% over 15 years. The Agricultural Marketing Authority projects output of about 38,500 tonnes in 2026—still a fraction of the 2010/11 peak.
Average yields currently hover around 500 kilograms per hectare. Nyasha Gandiwa, Head of Research at Quton Seed Company, said genetics account for about 50% of a farmer's final yield, with the other half determined by crop management and husbandry practices. "Using hybrid seeds we can actually have 4 tonnes per hectare," Gandiwa said. "Imagine a farmer who was doing 500kg per hectare now does 4 tonnes—that translates to good returns and the farmers' livelihoods improves." Some new varieties can produce up to 64 bolls per plant.
Climate Resilience and Pest Resistance
Arnold Gwengo, another Chinhoyi farmer, said hybrid seeds delivered encouraging results. "One thing that is encouraging is that the hybrid seeds are resistant to pests and diseases," he said. Promotion Harutizwi, an agriculture extension officer from the Zimbabwe Farmers Union, said the transformation from retained seeds to hybrids has been significant. "Hybrid seeds are resistant to pests and diseases which give high yields. They also don't drop lint which gives high value market price as compared to the retained seeds," Harutizwi said.
Tapiwa Bhiri, a cottonseed breeder based in Chinhoyi, joined the breeding program in 2025. "Today, I am happy because cotton farming has provided income to support my family and other projects outside farming," Bhiri said. Kaustubh Joshi, Quton Zimbabwe general manager, said the company's objective is to revitalize the cotton industry in Zimbabwe and beyond. "We are developing cotton seeds that we have taken to some parts of Africa and our aim is to develop climate smart seeds and resuscitate the cotton industry," Joshi said.
Government Commitment and Market Challenges
Medlina Magwenzi, Chief Director of Agricultural and Rural Development Advisory Services in Zimbabwe's Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development, said the government is committed to restoring cotton production through research and hybrid seed support. "We are realising that the cotton industry has been dwindling. But as a government, we know that this crop is just not a crop. It is a crop that we are looking forward to uplift the livelihoods of the smallholder farmers in Zimbabwe," Magwenzi said.
She said the government wants to ensure availability of fertilizers and genetically approved seed production. But she acknowledged that markets remain a challenge. Pricing, she said, needs to be dealt with. Gandiwa emphasized that farmers must have access to the best technologies available. "It is crucial that the farmer makes use of the best technologies available so that we improve farmer viability and yield," he said.

Cotton production isn't just an agricultural statistic—it's a lifeline for hundreds of thousands of rural households in Zimbabwe. The sector's collapse over 15 years left smallholder farmers vulnerable to poverty, unable to afford school fees or weather economic shocks. Hybrid seed technology offers a tangible path to restoring household incomes and rural economic stability, but only if farmers can access fair prices and reliable markets. Without addressing the pricing crisis that drove returns from US$1.35 to US$0.35 per kilogram, even the best seeds won't be enough to reverse decades of decline. The government's commitment to support infrastructure, fertilizer access, and genetic research is essential—but so is ensuring that the benefits of increased productivity reach the farmers who bear the risks and do the work.
