Avi Nesher’s latest film, 'Our Loves,' which centers on characters caught in the October 7 massacre, has been selected for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). This major North American cinematic event will feature the film in its Centerpiece section, dedicated to internationally recognized films. Industry figures have openly praised TIFF’s decision to feature an Israeli film during what they describe as a divisive period.
Countering Cultural Resistance
The selection of 'Our Loves' for TIFF arrives as international entertainment companies FOX Entertainment Studios and Access Entertainment have joined the project as co-producers. Access Entertainment holds a significant track record, having produced Oscar-winning movies such as 'The Zone of Interest' and 'Conclave.' The film was initially produced by United King Films and SIPUR, an Israel-based international entertainment studio, alongside Artomas Communications and Zoa Films. The involvement of these international partners is explicitly seen as a critical step in overcoming an unofficial but tangible international boycott targeting Israeli cinema, particularly films that explicitly tell an Israeli narrative in Hebrew. This concerted effort aims to bypass the cultural resistance movement.
SIPUR CEO Emilio Schenker stated that 'Our Loves' represents perhaps the most significant opportunity for Israel to present the human story of October 7 globally. He added that the film’s power has successfully broken through what he termed the "walls of the infuriating boycott directed against Israeli cinema." Schenker believes this story, which he describes as belonging to all, from the most painful day in the country’s history, will now be presented on a globally important cinematic stage. Liron Edery, head of marketing and distribution for United King Films, echoed this sentiment, expressing satisfaction that the boycott of Israeli cinema is "gradually crumbling." She emphasized that Israeli films continue to find platforms at major international festivals due to their quality and impact. Edery called the selection of 'Our Loves' for TIFF a significant statement, noting it tells "the Israeli story and what we experienced on that terrible day."
Shaping the Global Narrative
'Our Loves' marks Nesher’s 21st film. He is a prominent Israeli filmmaker, known for works such as 'The Troupe' (48 years ago), 'Turn Left at the End of the World' (22 years ago), and 'The Matchmaker' (16 years ago). Nesher frequently draws inspiration from real events, as seen in 'Image of Victory' (5 years ago), a movie depicting Jews and Egyptians during the War of Independence. The plot of 'Our Loves' follows seven characters whose lives intertwine after October 7, revealing hidden truths about their pasts and futures as they struggle to survive. The film features a large ensemble of leading Israeli actors, including Shalom Michaelshwilli, Magi Azarzar, and Noa Cohen.
The film recently received 12 nominations for the Ophir Awards, including best picture, director, and screenplay. At a panel during the Jerusalem Film Festival last month, 'Our Loves' was presented as a case study in overcoming the international boycott of Israeli film. Danny Cohen, president of Access Entertainment and a former director of BBC Television, spoke at the panel, expressing his belief in the film’s Academy Award potential. He stated that Avi Nesher’s work deserves that platform and hoped the Israeli Academy would select it as Israel’s submission for Best International Feature. The involvement of major international entertainment industry figures, including Len Blavatnik and Cohen, is expected to enable the film to reach millions of viewers worldwide, solidifying a particular narrative on a global scale.
