Itaú Unibanco has agreed to acquire every share of NeoSpace AI Technologies Ltda. for 2.925 billion reais, bringing the Brazilian AI startup under the control of one of the country’s largest banks. Reports valued the deal at about $580 million, $588 million or $589 million, depending on exchange rates and rounding. The purchase puts technology developed with the bank’s own data inside its corporate walls.
The agreement was announced Monday, Oct. 26, in a filing with Brazil’s securities regulator, the CVM. Itaú says the acquisition will accelerate its technology ambitions and strengthen its in-house artificial intelligence capabilities. The language is about innovation; the transaction is about ownership.
Who Controls the Technology
NeoSpace, founded in 2023, develops large foundational AI models that identify patterns in large data sets. It has worked with Itaú for nearly two years, using models trained on the bank’s own data to support generative AI applications in business and customer solutions, including financial management and credit.
Itaú says the technology has produced results in credit decisions, customer relationship management and fraud prevention. Those are consequential areas of banking, and the announcement locates the claimed gains inside the bank’s operations. It doesn’t describe customers or workers deciding how these systems should be used.
The bank says combining NeoSpace’s technology with its data, financial knowledge and scale could support more specialized models and expand their use across products and services. The acquisition is also tied to “ia.i,” Itaú’s generative AI assistant, which the bank says is intended to personalize customer experiences and provide more contextualized interactions and solutions.
Itaú led an $18 million funding round in early 2025 and acquired a 15% stake in NeoSpace. Now it has agreed to buy the remaining shares. The deal provides for an initial payment of an undisclosed amount at closing, with the balance deferred over five years, subject to contract conditions.
NeoSpace will retain autonomous management and structure after the acquisition, its team will remain, and founder Bruno Pierobon will continue as chief executive officer. Itaú said the purchase “strengthens the continuity of the relationship” with NeoSpace. The source describes no grassroots, community-run or mutual-aid response to the transaction; the parties named are the bank, the startup and regulators.
Regulators and the Bank’s Ambition
The agreement still requires approval from Brazil’s Administrative Council for Economic Defense (Cade), the country’s antitrust regulator, and the Central Bank of Brazil, along with other customary closing conditions. Those institutions hold formal authority over whether the deal can close. No approval is reported in the announcement.
Itaú Unibanco CEO Milton Maluhy Filho described the acquisition as a strategic investment, saying it could open growth opportunities, expand the bank’s ability to serve millions of people and companies, and change the value banks provide customers. He said: “Itaú wants to be among the institutions defining the next chapter of the global financial industry, and Brazil has shown it can set international benchmarks in banking innovation, with an opportunity to raise that standard through frontier artificial intelligence.”
The Rio Times reported that owning the models could give a bank greater control over data and costs, as Brazilian lenders compete with digital rivals such as Nubank. That is the corporate logic in plain view: more control over the tools, data and services through which a bank reaches customers. Whether the promised personalization delivers value to those customers remains a claim, not an outcome established by the announcement.
