Who Is Affected
Among those expressing concerns, job loss and economic disruption stand out as primary worries, affecting 32% of respondents. The anxiety surrounding reliance on AI and the potential for misinformation each resonate with 16% of voters. Additionally, the environmental repercussions of data centers and the misuse of AI technologies each concern 15% of participants. Notably, even among those who do not use AI, 80% are aware of it, and 72% have at least a basic understanding of generative AI tools. Despite this strong desire for regulation, awareness of local legislative efforts remains low. Only 13% of voters report knowing much about the Massachusetts Legislature's attempts to establish AI safety rules. However, once informed of these initiatives, support swells dramatically, with 75% backing measures to require that major AI companies evaluate catastrophic risks, develop safety protocols, and report serious incidents to the attorney general. Two-thirds of respondents want the state to take immediate action instead of waiting for federal guidelines to materialize.
