French anti-terror prosecutors said on Sunday that the suspect in a racist gun attack in Trappes had been moved from custody to a police psychiatric unit, where observation was likely to last 48 hours. One person was killed and five wounded. The prosecutors said most victims had foreign origins and that the suspect was believed to have racist motives.
From detention to psychiatric observation
The attack took place on Friday in Trappes, a working-class town near Paris, and neighbouring La Verrière. The 39-year-old suspect, partly identified as Kevin T., was arrested shortly afterwards in a car containing a submachine gun and tear-gas grenades. French anti-terror prosecutors extended his detention on Saturday for further questioning, then lifted it after a psychiatric examination.
The French National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office (PNAT) said: “After a psychiatric examination of Kevin T. carried out in the evening (of Saturday), his custody has been lifted.” It said that, following a psychiatric expert's conclusions, he “was transferred to the police psychiatric unit to be subjected to a psychiatric observation period likely to last 48 hours”.
The stated purpose is to assess whether his health allows interrogation to continue. The PNAT said the observation “should allow us to evaluate whether his state of psychiatric health is compatible with pursuing his interrogation sessions”. The suspect's custody, the examination and the next step in questioning are all being determined through the authorities handling the case. A source close to the investigation told AFP that Kevin T. was undergoing treatment for schizophrenia. The PNAT also said traces of cannabis and cocaine were found in his blood.
The people hit by the shooting
The person killed was Pengo Bossio Wangi, a 26-year-old man of Congolese origin. One of the injured was a 12-year-old girl, hit by bullets eight times; she remained in critical condition. Five people were wounded in total.
Police searched the suspect's home in Plaisir, outside Paris. A source close to the investigation said officers found a Bible, a Quran and a copy of Adolf Hitler's “Mein Kampf”. Those items, like the material found in the car, are now part of the reported investigation; the article provides no further account of what investigators have concluded from them.
President Emmanuel Macron called the shooting a “racist terrorist attack”. That description sits alongside the prosecutors' stated belief about racist motives, which they linked to the fact that most victims had foreign origins. The investigation is being handled by the PNAT, while the suspect remains under psychiatric observation rather than in custody.
Violence in an election season
The shooting came amid deep divisions in France. The country was heading for elections in six months, with far-right candidate Marine Le Pen leading in the polls. Political and social tensions had erupted into riots about a week earlier.
Those are the facts surrounding the attack: a dead man, five wounded people, a child in critical condition, and an investigation moving between police detention and psychiatric assessment. The authorities have identified a suspected racist motive, and the president has used the word “terrorist”. The available account does not say what political consequences will follow, or how the people of Trappes and La Verrière are responding. It does record who was killed, who remains critically injured, and which institutions now control the suspect's questioning.
