Trump's Dallas Convention: A Stand for National Power

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that Republicans will hold their first-ever national convention ahead of November’s midterm elections, an unprecedented gathering aimed at boosting turnout in crucial races. The event, scheduled for Sept. 9 and 10 in Dallas, seeks to ensure the party maintains control of Congress. Should Democrats regain control of either chamber, they would be empowered to block Trump’s agenda and launch investigations into his administration for the final two years of his term. This outcome would directly impede the national mandate established in the Presidential Election of 2024. Republicans currently hold only slim majorities in Congress. The party in power normally loses ground in the midterms, a dynamic Trump hopes to change. Without Trump on the ballot, Republican leaders worry it could be hard to galvanize their voters. Trump has been discussing such a convention since last year, floating the idea in a social media post. He stated Republicans would use the event “to show the great things we have done since the Presidential Election of 2024.” In a Truth Social post announcing the details, Trump promised, “We will also have lots of Great Entertainment — It will be a RALLY like none other!” This directly contrasts with the Democratic National Committee's approach. The Democratic National Committee considered hosting a similar midterm convention but ultimately rejected the idea. An expensive soiree could have strained the DNC’s finances, which are struggling with lackluster fundraising and millions in debt. Democrats have stated the GOP convention will be a chance for them to tie Republican House and Senate candidates to Trump. His approval rating is currently underwater, according to their assessment.

The Stakes for National Direction

Locating the convention in Texas places a spotlight on the state’s Senate race. This contest pits Democratic nominee James Talarico against Republican nominee Ken Paxton. Paxton, the state attorney general, defeated longtime Sen. John Cornyn in a primary earlier this year with Trump’s backing. Republican Senate leaders, however, fear Paxton’s history of scandals could undermine his candidacy. These scandals include an extramarital affair, an impeachment, and a securities fraud case that did not lead to a conviction. Such issues, they worry, could turn a winnable race into a drain on party resources. The Texas location also highlights the aftereffects of Trump’s mid-decade redistricting push that began in the state. This effort aimed to secure more seats for Republicans in this fall’s elections, directly impacting national representation.

Elite Maneuvers and Opposition Weakness

The Republican National Committee began laying the groundwork earlier this year. At its winter meeting in January, the RNC voted to amend procedures centered around quadrennial presidential nominating conventions, making such an event possible. Democrats considered holding a similar gathering ahead of the midterms but tabled the idea. The party did, however, hold such conferences in the 1970s and 1980s.
