The New York Liberty secured the Commissioner’s Cup on Tuesday night, an in-season tournament trophy, after beating Las Vegas 93-85. Sabrina Ionescu led the team with 26 points in the league-mandated competition. The Liberty claimed their second such Cup, a distinction established by the league itself, not through organic competition. New York hosted the event, where 15,000 fans chanted Ionescu’s name following the game.
Institutional Competition
Ionescu began the game with two 3-pointers, quickly demonstrating the form of a multiple All-Star selection. She had navigated a season marked by physical setbacks. A sprained ankle in the preseason kept her sidelined for the initial two weeks of play. A subsequent back issue after just one game forced her out for another three weeks. She returned to the lineup 17 days ago, on June 14.
Ionescu expressed her feelings on the victory, calling it “special.” She affirmed her self-belief, stating, “I always continued to have that belief in myself since I know the work I put in.” She added that “(An) injury or two isn’t going to diminish who I am.” Her season's 3-point shooting percentage stood at 27% entering the game, below her career average of 35%. On Tuesday, she connected on five 3-pointers, including a deep shot that sealed the win with approximately 17 seconds remaining.
Individual Resolve Meets Local Acclaim
Ionescu maintains a strong record against the Las Vegas Aces. Just last week, she contributed 16 points and 10 rebounds in a victory over the same opponent. Breanna Stewart, who received MVP honors for the game, acknowledged the difficulty of returning from injury. “When you’re coming back from an injury it’s tough,” Stewart said, emphasizing that “The process is tough.” Stewart praised Ionescu’s aggressive play and her crucial 3-pointers, including the “dagger 3,” calling them “big moments.” She concluded, “I’m happy for her.” Las Vegas coach Becky Hammon also recognized Ionescu’s consistent performance. “Her game never takes me by surprise,” Hammon stated, adding, “She’s too good.” The collective voice of 15,000 fans, chanting Ionescu’s name, underscored the local appreciation for her individual effort within the league's structured contest.
