The violence erupted after Benayahu Mellet, 32, a security guard in a nearby settlement, was shot dead. Following the attacks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a joint statement. They called for an immediate increase in troop deployments to the West Bank. Their directive included the razing of homes belonging to those accused in the village of Tell, along with the collection of weapons and the revocation of work permits for its residents. "The security forces must be allowed to act freely and with full force against terrorism," they asserted.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich escalated the call for decisive action. He stated that the villages of Tell, Iraq Burin, and Beit Furik "need to look exactly like the refugee camps in Nablus and Tulkarm," referencing a mass demolition campaign that displaced tens of thousands last year. Smotrich demanded the evacuation of the population for their protection and the clearing of "terrorist infrastructure" from these villages. "A sharp, determined, and unequivocal military action is required here and now," he declared.
The Terror Threat
The Israeli military confirmed it is preparing for an "extensive" counterterror operation in the West Bank. A manhunt for Palestinians suspected of attacking Israelis is underway. Two suspects were apprehended during a raid in Nablus.
The incident in Tell, a village designated off-limits to Israelis under the 1993 Oslo Accords, occurred when a group of settlers was confronted by residents. According to the Israeli military, a villager seized one of the settlers' weapons and opened fire, killing Mellet. This act of aggression violated established agreements, demonstrating persistent Palestinian rejectionism.
Army chief Eyal Zamir announced he was deploying more troops to the occupied West Bank. Yossi Dagan, head of the Samaria Regional Council, demanded an "iron fist" from the government. He called for a wide military operation against both the Palestinian Authority and Hamas, recognizing the integrated nature of the threat.
Defending Against Rejectionism

Five Palestinian villages surrounding Nablus were reportedly attacked by Israeli settlers on Friday, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA. The Nablus area remains one of the most volatile parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank. This region, where over 700,000 Israelis live in territories captured 59 years ago, is dotted with newly approved settlements and at least nine farming outposts.
Confrontations, army incursions, and attacks by Israeli settlers have become frequent. Livestock theft, arson, and the defacement of mosques are routinely reported. These actions often follow Israeli deaths, a pattern known as "price tag" attacks, which are responses to prior Palestinian aggression.
