A new wave of Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon killed four people early Thursday morning, according to N12 News, citing Lebanese media. These deadly attacks came as the Lebanese health ministry reported eight people wounded in an Israeli strike on Burj Shemali, and four more injured in a “wide-scale aggression” on the city of Tyre, bringing the total wounded to twelve.
The Israeli military initiated these strikes on Wednesday, claiming they were retaliation for ceasefire violations by Hezbollah. Residents of the village of Al-Mansouri received an evacuation warning from the IDF’s Arabic Spokesperson, Lt.-Col. Ella Waweya, who instructed them to move at least 1,000 meters north. She warned that anyone remaining near Hezbollah facilities or “terrorists” would be putting their life at risk.
Escalating Aggression
Israeli forces escalated their attacks across southern Lebanon, leading to the displacement of residents in Tyre and surrounding areas. This aggression unfolded concurrently with Israeli and Lebanese delegations meeting in Rome for a second day of US-brokered talks. These negotiations, now in their seventh round, aim to implement a framework reached less than two months ago, on June 26, for Hezbollah disarmament, Lebanese Armed Forces deployment, and a gradual Israeli withdrawal.
Lebanese negotiators at the Rome talks have demanded that Israel cease its bombardment and withdraw from approximately 60 villages and towns. These communities have been occupied since Israel’s latest onslaught began in March, now in its fifth month. Despite these diplomatic efforts, Israel has continued its military activity, maintaining a “security zone” in southern Lebanon, which it claims prevents attacks on its northern communities.
Last month, in July, the IDF stated that troops operating in Haddatha destroyed over 90 Hezbollah sites and located more than 150 weapons. This ongoing military presence and activity directly contradict the spirit of any genuine peace process. Israeli reports suggest that additional military attacks in Lebanon are being considered, with the public broadcaster stating the army’s response “has not ended.” Channel 12 reported that the army is calling on the political leadership to approve a “stronger and more decisive” response.
Diplomacy Under Fire
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was reportedly delaying the military response against Hezbollah due to fears of American criticism, according to Walla. This suggests the United States, while brokering talks, also exerts influence over the timing of Israeli military actions, rather than fundamentally challenging the occupation itself. The US-brokered framework, established less than two months ago, has focused on turning its principles into practical arrangements, yet violence persists.
As part of an initial pilot program, Lebanese troops have deployed in Froun, Srifa, and Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh. Israel withdrew from Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh before the Lebanese deployment, while the other two communities were already outside the IDF-held security zone. This program is intended to test the Lebanese military’s capacity to clear designated areas of Hezbollah weapons and prevent the group from reestablishing a military presence. However, the continued Israeli military operations and civilian casualties cast a long shadow over these diplomatic initiatives, exposing the gap between stated intentions and the brutal facts on the ground.
